Bunkers

Posted on: 9 February

The bunkers on the course are often taken out of play for lengthy periods when rain affects the bunkers with poor drainage or when there are insufficient resources available to maintain them to a playable standard.

The following will apply until further notice:

  • When only one or a few bunkers are out of play, they will be identified with a blue stake.
  • When all bunkers are deemed out of play, this will exclude the new bunkers to the left of the 5th and 9th These will always be in play unless the course staff places a blue stake in them.
  • When bunkers are in play, 30 cm preferred lie will be available. This should significantly reduce the need to take bunkers out of play and is considered a better option.

Note 1: If a bunker is out of play it is defined as GUR in the general area. This means that free relief is available outside the bunker at the nearest point of complete relief (Rule 16.1b). Also, if the ball lies outside the bunker and there is interference from the bunker to the stance etc, free relief is also available.

Note 2: Taking relief from a bunker that is out of play is optional. If a player chooses to play from the bunker 30 cm preferred lie is also available.
