Osteosarcoma is a cancer that many people have not heard about but is the most common primary malignant bone tumour. Sarcomas arise from bone, cartilage, or soft tissues. The vast majority of bony malignancies are metastatic. More than 75% occur in patients younger than 20 years (with peaks at 10-14 for girls and 15-18 for boys).
Since 23 April 2009, the EHS Foundation has spread awareness about Sarcomas to over 15,000 teenagers, their parents, family and friends. During our major awareness event, our website received hundreds of hits per day, Nationally and Globally.
One of the primary aims of the EHS Foundation is working towards identifying early symptoms which can result in early diagnosis. Currently, swelling and pain at the site is the first indication of an Osteosarcoma and at this stage, the sarcoma is multiplying rapidly. Osteosarcomas are often diagnosed late and can be misdiagnosed as growing pains or sports injuries, which is why early awareness is so important. But awareness is only a part of the process. The mortality rate for Sarcomas is high and funding is desperately needed to conduct research.
Genetic factors do play a role in the development of Osteosarcomas and Sarcoma biologists and geneticists, along with other medical specialists need to examine familial predisposition to Sarcomas.
We cannot raise awareness and funds for research without your help,
by joining us at this event you will be making a real difference.
